Not only is the skin the body’s largest organ; it’s arguably the most important. As its main function, the skin serves to protect us from our surroundings. While two layers make up the skin, we focus on the top layer, the epidermis. This outermost layer is in turn made up of four sub-layers. While each of these strata has its own purpose, most of them are composed of just one cell type – keratinocytes. Understanding how these cells function and what they need to stay healthy is crucial in formulating great products for the skin.
